NEW DELHI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that the country's scorching heatwaves have finished and that temperatures would begin to drop starting today. The weather service issued an Orange Alert for a number of locations in North India and predicted heavy rainfall for the ensuing two to three days in the mountainous regions.

"Today's heat wave has finished throughout India. The temperature will drop tomorrow and it will be overcast. For hail, storms, and rain in Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh, we have issued an Orange Alert. For the next two to three days, the hilly areas may get severe rain. RK Jenamani, a scientist at IMD, stated that there is a probability of storms in East India as well.

The weather warning was issued a day after the IMD predicted that incoming western disturbances, which are forecast to bring cooler weather starting on Wednesday, will affect various cities in North India, including the capital.

With temperatures rising to 46 degrees Celsius, Delhi residents were suffering from a severe heatwave. The challenging weather made it more difficult for people to work outside and put more strain on the electricity grid in the nation's capital.

However, it is expected that the disturbances in the west will bring the people of Delhi much-needed reprieve. Northwest India is being affected by the Western Disturbance. Jammu-Kashmir is starting to feel its effects. It will take effect in North Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, and Northwest India on May 24 and 25. Cloudy with a chance of light rain, according to IMD Delhi Regional Head Kuldeep Srivastava, said.

In addition to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, regions of Punjab connected to Himachal Pradesh, and some areas of North Rajasthan, hailstorms are possible during this time. On May 24 and 25, there will also be thunderstorms and lightning in Delhi NCR, the IMD official said.
