ODISHA: 18 sites in Odisha recorded a high temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday due to the sweltering conditions there. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this severe heatwave will last for an additional five days.

At least four locations in western Odisha registered temperatures at or above 44 degrees Celsius, according to the evening bulletin published by IMD's regional centre here. At 44.3 degrees, Sambalpur had the highest daily temperature in the state.

A temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius was reported in Boudh, 44 in Balangir and Nuapada, 44 in Jharsuguda, 43.8 in Malkangiri and Titlagarh, 43.5 in Rourkela, 43.1 in Sonepur, 42.8 in Sundargarh, 42.7 in Angul, 42.5 in Hirakud and Bhawanipatna, and 42 in Talcher.

The temperatures in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack reached 38.6 and 38 degrees Celsius, respectively, resulting in oppressive circumstances in both cities. The area's relative humidity was close to 90%. However, a period of thundershowers on Tuesday evening brought some relief to the state capital and several areas of the coastal belt.

According to the IMD's forecast, few locations in the state will experience a significant variation in daytime temperatures over the course of the next five days. At a few locations in interior Odisha, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Kalahandi, it is predicted to be 42 degrees Celsius or higher.

A yellow warning has been issued by the Meteorological Office suggesting the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds of 40–50 km/h. Up until 8:30 am on Wednesday, these conditions are anticipated to exist in a few locations in the Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Khurda districts.

In specified areas of the Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Dhenkanal districts, the Meteorological office has forecast the probability of thunderstorms and lightning.

The Special Relief Commissioner of Odisha has directed the leaders of nine western Odisha districts—Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Kalahandi—to take the appropriate precautions against the heatwave.

Dust storms are expected across Punjab and Haryana on Monday and in sporadic locations over Rajasthan through Thursday, according to the weather bureau.
