New Delhi: According to the MET Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon departed from the entire country on Monday, the previous day, making it the seventh delayed returning monsoon since 1975. The northeast monsoon affecting the southern peninsular region has started in southeastern peninsular India.

With the establishment of north-eastern winds in lower troposphere levels, the northeast monsoon rainfall has begun in extreme south peninsular India today. IMD reported that the departure of southwest monsoon 2021 from all over the country is the seventh most delayed return during 1975-2021 (on or after October 25). On October 28 last year, the southwest monsoon was completely overtaken by the country. In the year 2017, the monsoon had departed on 25 October in the year 2016 on 28 October, in the year 2010 on 29 October, in the year 2000 on 25 October and in the year 1975 on 27 October.

DS Pai, Chief of Scientific and Climate Research and Services in IMD Pune, said the return of monsoon from the country has been delayed in the last 10 years. The southwest monsoon should return from the country around October 15 and the northeast monsoon should start in peninsular India by October 20 but it has been delayed. It can be linked to long heat in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also related to climate change, which has also been recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its latest report.
