Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions, which has a significant impact on Western culture in various ways. Sanatan Dharma also known as Eternal way of living has made its way in hearts of many people. It made its impact on Britishers during colonial period. Swami Vivekanad also introduced Hinduism or Hindu thoughts in Word Parliament in 1893. ISKON started Hare- Krishna movement and started getting their followers from western countries.  Here are some of the key factors which influenced Hinduism on Western culture:

  • Philosophy and Spirituality: Also can be said as Bhakti Tradition. Hindu philosophy has had a profound impact on Western philosophical and spiritual thought. Ideas such as karma, reincarnation, and the concept of a higher self have found their way into Western philosophical and spiritual discussions. Bhakti tradition is based on the philosophy of a personal and loving relationship with divine.
  • Yoga and Meditation: Hindu practices of yoga and meditation had a profound impact on individuals and society and have become widely popular in the West. These practices, which originated in ancient Hindu texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, have helped people in seeking physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

  • Ideology and Scholarly Studies: The academic field of Ideology, which focuses on the study of Indian languages, religions, and cultures, has greatly contributed to the understanding and dissemination of Hinduism in the West. People from west are interested in reading various scriptures and Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta is widely popular among them. The Gita's teachings on duty, morality, and the nature of existence have provided valuable insights and guidance to many Western thinkers. Scholars and researchers have translated Hindu scriptures, studied Hindu philosophy.
  • Arts and Literature: Hindu mythology, stories, and epics have influenced Western literature, art, and popular culture. Krishna's portrayal as a playful, enchanting, and charming deity, often depicted with a flute and surrounded by devotees, has captivated Western artists, musicians, and poets. The aesthetic beauty and lyrical nature associated with Krishna have been a source of artistic inspiration for many Western creators. The ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana, has been adapted into plays, novels, and films in the West. Hindu gods and goddesses have been depicted in Western art and literature, often inspiring new artistic expressions and interpretations.
  • Alternative Spirituality: The ideas of chakras, energy healing, proper vegetarian diet and holistic living has been growing in western culture

​All these factors have made so many actors and famous western celebrities follow Hindu religion. Some of which are –

  1. George Harrison: The late George Harrison was a famous English musician, who broadened his interest of Indian culture to include Hinduism. He and his wife Pattie Boyd went on a pilgrimage to Mumbai to meet gurus. In 1968, all four Beatles went to Rishikesh in northern India to study meditation. He also played a significant role in popularizing Hinduism in the West. He was introduced to Hinduism through Indian musician Ravi Shankar and embraced its spiritual teachings. Harrison incorporated Hindu philosophy and concepts into his music and was a strong advocate for peace, meditation, and the Hare Krishna movement.
  2. Julia Roberts: American actress Julia Robets has openly expressed her interest in Hinduism and has been associated with the practice of yoga. She has spoken about the positive impact that meditation and Hindu spiritual principles have had on her life.
  3. Russell Brand: Comedian and actor Russell Brand has also shown a deep fascination with Hinduism. He has spoken about his experiences with meditation and yoga, and has incorporated Hindu philosophical ideas into his stand-up comedy and public talks.
  4. Madonna: Christian singer Madonna has been influenced by Hinduism. She has incorporated Hindu symbols and imagery into her performances and has practiced forms of Hindu-inspired meditation.
  5. Hugh Jackman: Actor Hugh Jackman has mentioned his interest in yoga and meditation practices. He has spoken about the positive impact of these practices on his well-being and spirituality.
  6. Oprah Winfrey: American talk show host mogul Oprah Winfrey has interviewed Hindu spiritual leaders, discussed Hindu philosophy, and incorporated aspects of Hindu teachings into her discussions on spirituality and personal growth.
