New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting with top authorities on Covid-19 on Saturday, saying that in view of the new variety, we must be proactive while focusing on steps to prevent the virus.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, PM Modi was briefed on the Covid-19 situation around the world, particularly the new Variant of Concern 'Omicron,' as well as its characteristics and impact in various nations (PMO).

He also emphasised the importance of closely monitoring all overseas arrivals and testing them according to protocol, with a particular focus on countries listed as "at risk." In light of the new findings, PM Modi has urged officials to reassess plans for reducing international travel restrictions. The Prime Minister further instructed officials to collaborate closely with state governments to ensure that sufficient awareness is achieved at the state and district levels. He ordered that intensive containment and active surveillance be maintained in clusters reporting higher case counts, as well as that technical assistance be offered to states that are currently reporting higher case counts. PM Modi further requested that people be made aware of the virus's ventilation and airborne behaviour.

In response to growing concern about a new COVID-19 variant known as 'Omicron,' which was first discovered in South Africa, India has added several countries to the list of countries from which visitors will need to take extra precautions upon arrival in India, including post-arrival infection testing.
