New Delhi: Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Saturday described the new COVID-19 type as a "serious threat", saying that low vaccination rates can't be concealed for long. "The new variety poses a significant threat. It is past time for the Indian government to take vaccination security seriously for our citizens. It's impossible to hide bad immunisation statistics for long behind one man's photo "Rahul Gandhi said.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Nationwide Vaccination Drive has resulted in the administration of 121.06 million vaccine doses. Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting with key officials today to discuss the circumstances around COVID-19 and vaccination.

In response to growing concern about a new COVID-19 variant known as 'Omicron,' which was first discovered in South Africa, India has added several countries to the list of countries from which visitors will need to take additional precautions upon arrival in India, including post-arrival infection testing.  Following the finding of the novel COVID variant 'Omicron' in South Africa, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has added Hong Kong and Israel to the list of countries from which travellers will need to follow additional steps upon arrival in India, including post-arrival testing.

In light of recently loosened visa rules and the opening up of foreign travel, this variant is said to have a considerable number of mutations and so has serious public health consequences for the country.
