According to the latest estimates from US health experts, the omicron variant was responsible for 95% of new coronavirus infections last week. The latest projections from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were released on Tuesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) utilises genomic monitoring data to forecast which COVID-19 virus strains are causing the most new infections.

According to the most recent estimates, the most prevalent coronavirus variant has shifted dramatically in just one month. Beginning in late June, the delta variety was the most common cause of infection in the United States. As of the end of November, the CDC reported that more than 99.5 percent of coronaviruses were delta.

The CDC's estimates are based on coronavirus specimens collected every week by state and local health agencies and university and private laboratories. Investigate the various their genetic sequences to see which COVID-19 virus variants are the most common.

Those specimens, however, only represent a small portion of what's available. In the United States, about 2.2 million cases have been recorded in the last week. As new data becomes available, the CDC has been revising its estimates in recent weeks.
