New Delhi: The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), based in Hyderabad, has been selected for the prestigious Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2025 in the institutional category. The recognition highlights INCOIS’s outstanding contributions to disaster management.

The Government of India set up this annual award to acknowledge the exceptional efforts and selfless service of individuals and organizations in the area of disaster management. According to a statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the award is announced every year on January 23, commemorating the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

The honor includes a cash prize of Rs.51 lakh and a certificate for institutions, while individuals receive Rs.5 lakh along with a certificate. Nominations for the 2025 edition were opened on July 1, 2024, and widely promoted through print, electronic, and social media platforms. The award received an overwhelming response, with 297 nominations submitted by institutions and individuals.

A Pioneer in Disaster Management

Established in 1999, INCOIS, located in Hyderabad, Telangana, plays a pivotal role in India’s disaster management initiatives. The center is especially known for its expertise in early warnings for ocean-related disasters. Its notable achievement includes the establishment of the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC), which delivers tsunami alerts within just 10 minutes, benefiting not only India but also 28 Indian Ocean countries.

Recognized as a top Tsunami Service Provider by UNESCO, INCOIS operates through a vast network of seismic stations, tide gauges, and ocean sensors. Apart from tsunami alerts, it provides critical forecasts for high waves, cyclones, and storm surges, ensuring the safety of coastal communities and maritime activities.

Notable Contributions

INCOIS’s contributions during major natural disasters like the Phailin cyclone in 2013 and the Hudhud cyclone in 2014 stand out. Its timely advisories played a significant role in evacuating coastal populations, reducing the risks associated with these calamities.

Additionally, the organization developed the Search and Rescue Aided Tool (SARAT) to support the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, and Coastal Security Police in locating people or objects lost at sea.

Prestigious Recognitions

Over the years, INCOIS has garnered numerous accolades, including the Geospatial World Excellence in Maritime Services Award in 2024 and the Disaster Risk Reduction Excellence Award in 2021.
