Ahmedabad: Team India captain Virat Kohli on Friday blamed the batsmen's failure to assess the pitch for their team's defeat in the first T20 International against England. Kohli thought that the batsmen needed to use the depth of the crease and bounce which only Shreyas Iyer (67 runs from 48 balls) did. Kohli said after the match, 'We were not yet aware enough about what we have to do on this type of pitch. I think (there was a lack of playing shots) that we attempted to play there in the middle. This is something we'll have to do.'

Kohli further said that it was not a good day as a batsman. You have to accept your deficiency and come back stronger with a bit more intent and clarity of plans in the next match. Virat said, 'It was a strange beginning for us. The wicket allowed you to hit the kind of shots you wanted. I think Shreyas innings were an example of how you can use the depth of the crease and what you can do against the bounce because there was a variable bounce at a time. He was hitting a square wicket which others failed to do.'

Captain Kohli also said that the Indian batsmen got ahead of themselves. If the pitch allows you to play such shots, then you can be aggressive with the very first ball. But perhaps we got ahead of ourselves, and could not find enough time in between to assess the circumstances.
