India commenced its four-year tenure as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission on Monday, marking its return after nearly twenty years. Securing this position in April, after a successful election bid, holds significance as it coincides with the Commission's pivotal role in determining fresh standards for national accounts. These standards will notably influence the recalibration of India's GDP calculations, as the current series is based on 2008 revisions, using 2012 as the base year.

India was elected through a secret ballot, while Argentina, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Ukraine, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the United States of America were selected unanimously to serve a four-year term starting on January 1, 2024.
