India becomes fastest country to give 170 million doses of corona vaccine: Health Ministry

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry on Monday said that India has vaccinated people at the fastest pace in the world by giving them 170 million doses of corona vaccine. The ministry said China took 119 days to reach the figure, while the US took 115 days. The vaccination drive was launched from January 16 with doses to health workers in India.

This was followed by vaccination of front line workers from February 2. This was followed by the introduction of vaccines for different age groups. 17 crore doses of vaccine have been given in the country. As per the provisional report till 7 am, a total of 17,01,76,603 doses were given in the 24,70,799 session. Out of these, 95,47,102 health workers were given the first dose and 64,71,385 were given the second dose. On the other hand, 1,39,72,612 employees of front line workers have been given the first dose and 77,55,283 have been given the second dose.

The first dose has been given to 20,31,854 people in the 18-44 age group in the country. However, in the 45 to 60 year group, 5,51,79,217 have been given the first dose of the vaccine and 65,61,851 have been given the second dose. Among senior citizens, 5,36,74,082 have been given the first dose and 1,49,83,217 have been given the second dose. Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh are part of 66.79 per cent immunization in the country. The Ministry said that 6,89,652 doses of the vaccine were vaccinated on the 114th day of vaccination (May 9).
