India Bids Farewell to Agricultural Visionary: Dr MS Swaminathan's Final Journey

CHENNAI: M.S. Swaminathan, the revered luminary in the field of agriculture, received a final farewell befitting his monumental contributions to India. His cremation, an event that drew solemnity and admiration, was conducted with the utmost honor bestowed by the State government.

Dr. Swaminathan, widely acclaimed as the "Father of India's Green Revolution," peacefully departed from this world at the age of 98 within the confines of his Chennai residence. His mortal remains were respectfully placed at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation campus in Taramani, allowing people from all walks of life to gather and pay their respects.

On a solemn Saturday, a specially designated vehicle, accompanied by devoted staff from MSSRF and numerous well-wishers, carried his body to the final resting place at Besant Nagar. The momentous occasion was marked by a poignant gesture from the Armed Reserve unit of the Greater Chennai City Police. They stood in stoic silence, followed by a somber gun salute, a poignant tribute to the departed luminary. It was a solemn act of respect befitting Dr. Swaminathan's towering legacy.

The cremation ceremony was attended by his daughters, grieving family members, and a host of admirers who had been touched by his visionary work.

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi laid a wreath and paid his heartfelt tributes to Dr. Swaminathan. In a show of bipartisan respect, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the Leader of the Opposition and General Secretary of AIADMK, and D. Raja, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, paid their respects. The esteemed gathering also included K. Krishnankutty, Kerala's Minister of Electricity, Mavelikara Kodikunnil Suresh, a Member of Parliament, G.K. Mani, PMK Leader, and G. Balakrishnan, the State Secretary of CPI(M), all united in their admiration for the departed legend.
