Leh: India is actively strengthening its infrastructure along its borders with Pakistan and China, particularly in the Union Territory of Ladakh, to address ongoing security challenges. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is focusing on several critical projects to improve connectivity and defense readiness.

The BRO plans to complete the construction of special infrastructure on the China border in the coming weeks, including an all-season alternative route to Leh. This development is part of the India-China Border Roads Program, which prioritizes enhancing road connectivity in the region.

Currently, there are three main routes to Leh:

The Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil route through Jammu and Kashmir.
The Manali-Rohtang route in Himachal Pradesh, which splits at Darcha. One branch goes to Leh via Padam and Nimu, while the other passes through Baralacha La and Tanglang La.
The existing road connectivity includes the 255 km Durbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DS-DBO) road, alongside two parallel roads running near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.

The BRO is working on a crucial project involving the 4 km long cut section of the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road. This section is nearing completion, with most of the road now paved. Additionally, the construction of the 4.1 km Shinku La tunnel on the Manali-Darcha-Padam-Nimu axis is set to begin soon. This tunnel, which will be the highest in the world at 15,800 feet, is expected to reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 60 km and provide an all-weather route.

The BRO's priorities also include completing the Leh-Demchok road and establishing connectivity to several other roads running parallel to the LAC in eastern Ladakh. The organization is working on four key roads under the India-China Border Roads (ICBR) project, including routes in Arunachal Pradesh. Plans are underway for the 1,800 km Frontier Highway in Arunachal Pradesh, which will connect Bomdila, Nafra, Huri, and Vijaynagar near the Myanmar border. The project, with an allocated budget of Rs 6,000 crore for some sections, is expected to enhance regional connectivity significantly.

The BRO's efforts are reflected in the increased budget for the current financial year, which has risen by 30 percent to Rs 6,500 crore. This funding supports ongoing projects related to roads, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure necessary for rapid troop and goods movement in strategically important areas.
