NEW YORK: India's Deputy Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra, has emphatically called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, coupled with a demand for the unconditional release of hostages. He made this plea during the United Nations Security Council's Open Debate on the Middle East held on Wednesday.

Ambassador R Ravindra underscored the urgency of halting all hostilities in Gaza, stressing the imperative need for peace and stability in the region. His statement at the UN session reiterated India's commitment to humanitarian principles and international law, urging all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians affected by the conflict.

During a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on the Middle East, India reiterated its call for an urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. R Ravindra, India's Deputy Representative to the UN, emphasized the need for the unconditional release of hostages and condemned the terror attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023, expressing concern over civilian casualties in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

India urged all parties involved to adhere strictly to international law and humanitarian principles. "We emphasize the necessity for an immediate and complete ceasefire, as well as safe and sustained humanitarian assistance with unimpeded access to essential services in Gaza. Additionally, we urge the prompt and unconditional release of all hostages," Ambassador R Ravindra stated.

Acknowledging the diplomatic efforts of countries like Qatar and Egypt in engaging with Israeli and Palestinian leaders to seek resolution, India reaffirmed its steadfast support for a two-state solution. This solution aims for the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent Palestine alongside Israel, respecting mutually agreed borders and ensuring Israel's security needs.

Ambassador R Ravindra highlighted India's substantial developmental aid to Palestine, totaling nearly $120 million. This includes a recent $35 million contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Since 2018, India has annually contributed $5 million to UNRWA and has already disbursed $2.5 million, with the first installment transferred on July 15, 2024.

India affirmed its commitment to engaging with the region to achieve lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
