China has lodged a protest with India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's congratulatory message following his recent election victory. The Chinese government insists that India should reject Taiwan's "political calculations."

Modi's remarks came in reply to a message from Taiwan's President, who had congratulated him on his election win. President Lai expressed his desire to enhance the Taiwan-India partnership, focusing on trade, technology, and other sectors to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

In his response, PM Modi thanked President Lai for his warm message and expressed his eagerness to strengthen ties and work towards a mutually beneficial economic and technological partnership.

Reacting to these exchanges, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China has formally protested to India. She emphasized that Taiwan is viewed by China as a part of its territory and opposes any official interactions between Taiwan's authorities and countries that have diplomatic relations with China.

Mao Ning highlighted that the One China principle is universally recognized in international relations and emphasized that India, having made serious political commitments, should resist Taiwan's political calculations.

President Lai, 64, assumed office as Taiwan's President last month after winning the Presidential election. In his inaugural address, he called on Beijing to stop its intimidation of the self-ruled island. Lai's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has advocated for democracy, has faced increasing threats from China over the years.
