India and Germany are looking to broaden their collaborative efforts by partnering with a third developing-country ally, specifically aiming to engage with African nations Ethiopia and Madagascar. Chaman Dhanda, heading India's trilateral cooperation at Germany's technical assistance agency, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), revealed this expansion plan.
Their ongoing initiatives encompass empowering women in Malawi with farming opportunities and implementing agricultural technology solutions for potato production in Cameroon.
The shared objective is to consolidate strengths and experiences in development cooperation to offer sustainable, inclusive projects to third countries. These initiatives aim to tackle developmental challenges, align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and address climate-related targets. This commitment was articulated in a joint declaration of intent released in May 2022, emphasizing collaboration through multilateral institutions like the International Solar Alliance (ISA), where both India and Germany hold membership.
While the Indo-German partnership primarily focuses on climate and sustainability initiatives for partner nations, Germany intends to extend its involvement. Jochen Flasbarth, state secretary at Germany’s federal ministry for economic cooperation and development, expressed interest in broadening the program to encompass healthcare projects and funding health-related research and development in Africa.
Expanding their horizons beyond Latin America and Africa, India and Germany are exploring potential collaborations in Asia. India has also ventured into trilateral cooperation partnerships with other nations like the United States and France. This strategy aims to leverage technical capabilities and financial resources from trusted allies in strategically significant regions.
