New Delhi: Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has recommended that the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 transition into a virtual event. Vaishnav emphasized that this shift would allow for broader participation, particularly from individuals in remote areas.

"The IMC is an esteemed gathering for the ICT industry, and our aim is to make it accessible to as many people as possible," Vaishnav stated. Traditionally held in person in New Delhi, the IMC has faced logistical challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. Vaishnav believes that a virtual event would provide a safer alternative and enable global participation.

The ICT industry has responded positively to Vaishnav’s proposal. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) expressed enthusiasm, considering a virtual IMC as a "remarkable opportunity" to showcase India's ICT sector prowess.

In addition to pandemic-related concerns, Vaishnav cited rising costs associated with hosting the IMC as a contributing factor behind the proposal. The government remains dedicated to ensuring the success of the event, and Vaishnav believes that transitioning to a virtual format is the most effective strategy to achieve that objective.

The IMC serves as a vital platform for the ICT sector, uniting stakeholders to discuss the latest trends and advancements. Shifting to a virtual IMC would expand its reach and offer a more cost-efficient solution. While the final decision on Vaishnav’s proposal is pending, its potential benefits are compelling.
