NEW DELHI: Upping the ante to unicorns in self-help groups for women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has moved from women development to women-led development in the last 9 years.
Addressing the post-Budget webinar series on women empowerment, Narendra Modi highlighted that enrolment of women in the fields of engineering, science, technology, and maths in the country today was 42 percent. “Can we make unicorns in self-help groups too, we have brought that vision in this year's Budget,” PM said.
The Prime Minister also said around 70 percent of beneficiaries of the Mudra loan are women.“These women are not only increasing the earnings of their families but are also opening new economic avenues for the nation,” he said.
Unicorn entities are those that reach a valuation of USD 1 billion without being listed on the stock market.
PM Modi also linked a sense of respect towards women to their equality.“The enrolment of women in fields of engineering, science, and technology in India is 42% today, which is more than in developed nations like the US.”
Notably “In this budget, Rs 80,000 crore has been allocated for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.” “Women will be given a 7.5% interest rate under Mahila Samman Saving Certificate Scheme. PM Awas Yojana has also empowered women who are homemakers,” PM said.
“In the past 9 years, women self-help groups have availed loans amounting to Rs 6.15 lakh crore,” he said, adding that the government’s budget this year has also the vision of building unicorns in Self Help Groups.”
