New Delhi: India's rice exporters are worried by the deepening tension between the US and Iran. India exports rice extensively to Iran. The relations between the two countries have reached a very bad phase since the killing of Iran's General Qasim Suleimani in the US drone strike in Iraq's capital Baghdad on Friday last week.

On Wednesday, Iran claimed that it had destroyed 2 US military bases in Iraq with missile strikes. Iran also claimed the deaths of 80 US soldiers but has been denied by Iraq and US President Donald Trump. Rice exporters (most of whom hail from Haryana) have stopped sending rice consignments to Iran. A large number of containers at Gujarat's Mundra port have been barred from entering Iran.

Kaithal-based rice exporter Narendra Miglani told the media that most exporters had started the process of sending the first consignment of rice for this season, but this has now been put on hold. Miglani said, 'I had delivered 100 containers to the port of Mundra, which were to be sent to Iran's Bandar-Abbas and Chabahar ports. We have stopped sending further consignments. Until the situation improves, this situation will remain the same. We have stopped packing rice. '
