India has sent 150 tonnes of more oxygen to Sri Lanka to assist in the fight against the third wave of the COVID-19 epidemic. Sri Lanka's national lockdown was extended till September 13 due to an increase in COVID-19 deaths and mounting pressure on the hospital sector.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo tweeted on Saturday that " 150 tonnes of oxygen from Vizag and Chennai arrived at the shores of Colombo." India since mid last month has been sending urgent supplies of oxygen to Sri Lanka following a personal request for assistance by the Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa, it said.

In August, the Indian naval ship Shakti transported 100 tons of liquid medical oxygen to Sri Lanka in order to assist the island nation. In April-May 2020, around 26 tonnes of critical medical supplies were delivered. In July 2020, a USD 400 million currency swap was made available. According to the Indian High Commission, the first shipment of vaccinations given by India in January 2021 allowed Sri Lanka to start its immunization campaign ahead of schedule. Infections are on the rise in Sri Lanka at the moment. As of Thursday, over 9,600 people have died due to the coronavirus and the total number of infections stood at 447,757.
