New Delhi: India has discussed with the Sri Lankan side on Wednesday to release Indian fishermen recently arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters. India has requested Sri Lanka to release the fishermen arrested on charges of poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
The matter was raised at the fourth meeting of the Joint Working Group on Fisheries (JWG-4), in which issues related to fishermen and fishing boats were discussed. The meeting between the two countries took place after the recent arrest of fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. According to a statement from the Ministry of Fisheries, India also reiterated Sri Lanka's commitment to abandon fishing boats, which was made by the Sri Lankan President during his visit to India in November 2019.
Recently Sri Lankan Navy has taken 40 fishermen and 6 boats in custody on the charge of poaching of fish in its sea area. Referring to this, the Indian delegation asked the Sri Lankan side to ensure the early release of all of them and provide the necessary support and facilities till their release.
