In the wake of a powerful earthquake striking Taiwan, the Indian Taipei Association has taken steps to assist Indian nationals residing in the affected areas. They have set up a helpline to provide guidance and support to those in need.

"After the earthquake off the eastern coast of Taiwan early on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the India Taipei Association has established an emergency helpline for Indian nationals in Taiwan. This helpline can be reached via mobile at 0905247906 or through email at ad.ita@mea.gov.in," announced the India Taipei Association on social media platform X.

The statement further urged all Indian nationals to heed advisories issued by local authorities.

The earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, struck Hualien City, resulting in four deaths and at least 57 injuries. Local authorities promptly initiated rescue operations in affected areas, where collapsed buildings and trapped individuals were reported.

In New Taipei City's Zhonghe district, the fire department successfully rescued four individuals from a collapsed warehouse. Meanwhile, in Xindian, a building experienced foundation sinking, but all 12 individuals trapped inside were rescued unharmed.

Although Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines canceled their tsunami warnings, observed tsunami waves prompted caution along the coasts of Taiwan and southwestern Japanese islands. Fortunately, no significant damage was reported due to these waves.

The earthquake's epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, south-southeast of Hualien County Hall, with varying intensity levels reported across Taiwan. A tsunami alert was issued, particularly for Miyakojima and Okinawa islands, warning of potential waves up to 3 meters high.

Despite the seismic activity, initial reports suggest no major damage. However, it's essential for residents to remain vigilant and follow local advisories to ensure safety.
