According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India will likely get above-average rainfall in September. In August, monsoon rainfall was 24% below normal, according to the meteorological service. For the four-month season commencing in June, the IMD defines typical, or normal, rainfall as between 96 and 104 percent of a 50-year average of 88 cm (34 inches).

Meanwhile, weather stations in Delhi recorded 112.1 mm of rain in 24 hours ended at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the city's greatest single-day rainfall in September in at least 12 years. The heavy burst of rain submerged low-lying areas in knee-deep water and affected traffic movement in parts of the city.

On average, the capital gauges 125.1 mm precipitation in September every year, according to the IMD.
