India, UK working to fulfil FTA by year-end: PM Modi

New Delhi: India and the United Kingdom are trying to complete the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year, said Prime Minister Modi.

Modi gave a joint press conference after bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at Hyderabad House, saying, "We just finished FTA negotiations with the UAE and Australia. With the same spirit and devotion, we want to pursue a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom.

"We formed the strategic relationship last year, and we added the key Roadmap-2030," Modi said. "During our conversations, we reviewed the progress done in this direction and set specific goals."  He went on to say that both countries had chosen to step up their defence cooperation. "We welcome the UK as a supporter of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in manufacturing, technology, design and development, and other areas," Modi added.

Referring to India's recent reforms in the infrastructure modernisation plan and the National Infrastructure Pipeline, Modi stated that India welcomes increased investment from UK firms in the country "On Thursday, we saw an example of this in Halol, Gujarat.

"Around 1.6 million Indian-born British citizens have made a beneficial contribution to the Indian economy and society. We are proud of those of Indian ancestry, and we want to strengthen this bridge even more. Prime Minister Johnson has personally aided us in this regard, and I thank him for it "Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated.

PM Modi also stated that India has demonstrated its commitment to upholding the pledges made at COP-26 in Glasgow and has decided to strengthen the climate and energy relationship. "I extend an invitation to the United Kingdom to join India's National Hydrogen Mission and express my gratitude for the Strategic Tech Dialogue that has been established between the two countries.”
