New Delhi: Indian Army Chief General MM Narvane has termed the capacity development of the armed forces as a national imperative in view of India's border dispute with two neighbouring countries (Pakistan and China). At the same time, he has said that destructive technologies are rapidly changing the character of the modern world. They, therefore, need to enrich educational strength with operational understanding to suffice the challenges of modern warfare.

The Indian Army on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Defence University (RRU) at Gandhinagar and the Bhaskaracharya National Institute of Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG-N). The event was held at the RRU campus in Gandhinagar. According to the Ministry of Defence, the MoU will facilitate development in geographical information systems, training materials and technical help. Speaking on the occasion, the Army Chief said, "Destructive technologies are changing the character of the modern world faster than ever before. We have seen the decisive impact of these technologies in recent conflicts all over the world. In view of our active and disputed borders in the North (Pakistan) and east (China) with our two neighbours, the development of the capacity of the Armed Forces is a national imperative.''

Army Chief Narvane further said that dependence on specific technologies with other countries creates "significant weaknesses, especially in times of conflict," and Indian army cooperation with BISAG-N will set a long way towards addressing these challenges in an internal manner.
