New Delhi: The Modi government has decided to give Indian citizenship to minorities who have come to India from neighbouring Islamic countries. People coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan were currently living in two districts of Gujarat. These include Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians. The government decided to give Indian citizenship to all of them under the Citizenship Act, 1955. Let us know that this decision to give citizenship under the Citizenship Act, 1955 in place of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) is very important.

The CAA law seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Since rules have not been made by the government under CAA so far, no one has been given citizenship under it so far. According to a notification of the Union Home Ministry, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in Anand and Mehsana districts of Gujarat will be allowed to register as citizens of India under Section 5, Section 6 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and as per the provisions of the Citizenship Rules, 2009 or will be granted a citizen certificate of the country. These people were living as refugees in Gujarat for a long time.

Let me tell you that there was a fierce ruckus in the whole country about CAA. Communal violence and agitations had taken place for several months in many states, including Delhi. A day earlier, the apex court granted three weeks time to the governments of Assam and Tripura to file their replies on some petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and posted the issue for further hearing on December 6.
