Men's JUNIOR Asia Cup: In a bid to extend their winning streak during the group round of the Men's Junior Asia Cup in Salalah, Oman, India takes on archrival Pakistan on Saturday. The team has already had an exciting start to the season by winning two straight games.
Araijeet Singh Hundal (36'), Sharda Nand Tiwari (39'), and Uttam Singh (56') each scored once as India defeated Chinese Taipei 18-0 in their opening Pool A encounter and defeated Japan 3-1 on Thursday.
Before the game, captain Uttam Singh said, "We have had a strong start to the tournament and will aim to carry that mentality into our match against Pakistan. Our first two victories have given us the assurance we need to continue in the competition. Pakistan has a great team as well, so the game will be close. "We have a strong defensive corps, but Pakistan's ranks also contain strong attackers. But because we have dealt with similar difficulties in the past, we are certain that we can prevent them from scoring goals," Uttam was quoted as saying in a release from Hockey India.
Pakistan, however, also got off to a strong start in the competition, defeating Chinese Taipei 15-1 in their opening round and Thailand 9-0 in their subsequent match to remain unblemished so far.
The challenge of playing Pakistan is constant. However, we have prepared well, and if we concentrate on the lessons we have learned over the previous few months, we will be able to perform well in this game. The head coach of the India junior team, CR Kumar, stressed that we must remain composed and play to our abilities.
India defeated Japan 6-2 in the Men's Junior Asia Cup Final between the two teams in 2015. The junior men's hockey teams of Pakistan and India have faced off seven times since 2011, with Pakistan winning once, India winning five times, and one match ending in a tie.
Prior to playing Thailand in their final Pool match on May 28, India will play Pakistan on May 27.
