NEW DELHI: The government told the Lok Sabha that nearly 20,000 Indian students have returned from Ukraine, according to the data provided by the Ministry of External Affairs.

According to information from MEA, the Indian Embassy in Kiev has spoken with all relevant Ukrainian universities to ensure that students may easily obtain transcripts and other documentation. This was said by Minister of State for Health, Bharati Pravin Pawar.

The National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a requirement for admission to the MBBS programme under the Eligibility Requirement for Taking Admission in an Undergraduate Medical Course in a Foreign Medical Institution Regulation, 2002. This regulation states that any Indian citizen abroad who intends to earn their primary medical degree from a medical institution outside of India on or after May 2018 must pass the NEET.

For such individuals, the NEET score will be taken into consideration as the eligibility certificate, and NMC will not need to grant any additional authorization.

Thus, information about students who seek MBBS abroad is not kept centrally. The "Screening Test Regulations, 2002" or the "Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021" apply to foreign medical students and graduates, respectively.

The Indian Medical Council Act of 1956, the National Medical Commission Act of 2019, and the Regulations do not contain any clauses allowing for the admission or transfer of medical students from any foreign medical institutions to Indian medical colleges.

The NMC has not approved the transfer of or accommodations for any foreign medical students in any Indian medical institution.
