CHENNAI:   Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding him to give necessary directions to the concerned ministries and authorities to make necessary amendments in the relevant Central regulations for permitting medical students who have returned from war-torn Ukraine to complete their education in Indian institution.

His demand came shortly after the National Medical Commission informed the Parliament that no foreign medical students may be transferred to or accommodated at any Indian medical college or university.

In the letter, Stalin made note of the fact that, despite the fact that the Parliament's response was in response to measures taken in some states regarding admission to medical colleges, it has drawn attention to the uncertain future of medical students who returned from the country's war-torn Ukraine and abandoned their studies midway. He said that it might not be realistic for the students to return to the colleges there given the current situation in Ukraine and that uncertainty would continue even after the fighting ended.

He says that since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, about 2,000 medical students have returned to Tamil Nadu, making it the state with the greatest proportion of refugees from Ukraine.

If the government is having trouble amending the pertinent Central acts for medical admission, it should take the necessary actions as soon as possible to give students a different option to continue their education in foreign institutions with comparable rules and a stimulating academic environment, he said. He continued by saying that the Tamil Nadu government would fully support any efforts made in this regard by the Prime Minister and the Centre.
