Lakshadweep: The Indian Navy has officially commissioned its new naval base, "INS Jatayu," situated on Minicoy island in Lakshadweep. This move aims to bolster the Navy's operational capabilities and extend its reach within the strategically vital Indian Ocean region.

INS Jatayu becomes the second naval base in Lakshadweep, following the establishment of INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti. The primary objectives of this new base include strengthening the Navy's efforts in anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations within the Western Arabian Sea.

The commissioning ceremony, presided over by Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, took place at Minicoy. Notable dignitaries attending the event included Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel, Southern Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral V Srinivas, and Western Naval Command Chief Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh.

Admiral Kumar explained the significance of naming the base after Jatayu, a mythical character from the epic Ramayana known for attempting to thwart the abduction of Sita. He emphasized the spirit of selfless service and security exemplified by Jatayu, likening it to the unit's mission of providing surveillance and protection.

Furthermore, Admiral Kumar highlighted the role of INS Jatayu in enhancing situational awareness, drawing parallels to the information relayed by Jatayu to Lord Ram in the Ramayana. He stressed the importance of the base in maintaining maritime domain awareness, especially in conjunction with INS Baaz in the Andamans, to safeguard national interests.

In terms of operational objectives, INS Jatayu is expected to contribute significantly to combating piracy and addressing security threats more effectively. Admiral Kumar underscored the necessity of heightened surveillance in light of prevailing geopolitical developments, citing the increasing maritime terror, crime, and piracy in the Indian Ocean region.

With an assertive posture, the Indian Navy has been actively engaged in anti-drone, anti-missile, and anti-piracy operations, aimed at safeguarding merchant traffic in the west and north Arabian Sea regions. The establishment of INS Jatayu further reinforces India's commitment to securing its maritime interests and ensuring regional stability.
