Kochi, Kerala: The Indian Navy is gearing up to commission its inaugural squadron of MH 60R Seahawk multi-role helicopters today, March 6, in Kochi, Kerala. This marks a significant milestone in India's efforts to modernize its defense capabilities, according to Navy officials.

The choppers will officially join the fleet under the designation of INAS 334 squadron and are anticipated to enhance the Navy's operational capacity in the Indian Ocean region, particularly in response to increasing Chinese military activities in the area.

Here's what you need to know about the new MH 60R Seahawk helicopters:

This marks the first squadron of MH 60R Seahawks to be commissioned in the Indian Navy, under the designation of INAS 334.

The procurement of these helicopters was facilitated through an agreement signed with the US under foreign military sales in February 2020.

The addition of Seahawk helicopters is expected to greatly bolster the Navy's maritime capabilities. According to Navy officials, "The MH 60R helicopter would enhance India's blue-water capabilities, extending the operational reach of the Navy and supporting sustained naval operations across spectrums and over vast maritime domains."

The Seahawk helicopter has undergone rigorous testing in Indian Reference Atmosphere (IRA) conditions and has been seamlessly integrated into the fleet.
Equipped with advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics, the Seahawk is designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue missions, and medical evacuations, among other operations.

The Indian Navy emphasizes that the deployment of Seahawk helicopters in the Indian Ocean Region will bolster the force's maritime presence, serving as a deterrent to potential threats and ensuring a secure environment in this strategically crucial area.
The commissioning of the Seahawks underscores the Indian Navy's commitment to enhancing maritime security, in line with the Government of India's vision of ensuring security and growth for all in the region.

The commissioning ceremony of the MH 60R Seahawk squadron signifies a momentous occasion for the Indian Navy, marking a step forward in its efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and secure the nation's maritime interests.
