The Indian Navy announced on Thursday that it has delivered nine pirates to the Mumbai Police, following their capture in an operation off the coast of Somalia last week. Indian naval vessels INS Trishul and INS Sumedha conducted a significant operation on March 29 in the high seas, resulting in the successful rescue of the fishing vessel Al Kambar and its crew of 23 Pakistani nationals.

According to the Navy, all nine pirates involved in the act of piracy were detained during this operation. "INS Trishul arrived in Mumbai on April 3 and handed over all nine pirates to the local police for further legal proceedings in accordance with Indian laws, particularly the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act of 2022," stated Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal.

The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting merchant shipping and sailors navigating the Indian Ocean Region, regardless of their nationality.

Following the successful rescue of the fishing vessel Al Kambar and its Pakistani crew members by Indian warships INS Trishul and INS Sumedha, the Indian Navy has taken decisive action against piracy in the Indian Ocean Region. Handing over the captured pirates to the Mumbai Police marks a significant step in upholding maritime security and enforcing anti-piracy measures.

The operation, conducted on March 29, underscores the Indian Navy's commitment to safeguarding merchant shipping and seafarers navigating through these vital maritime routes. With piracy posing a persistent threat to maritime trade and safety, such actions serve as a deterrent and reinforce the rule of law on the high seas.

As legal proceedings against the pirates commence under the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act of 2022, the collaboration between the Indian Navy and law enforcement agencies demonstrates a coordinated effort to combat maritime crime. This operation not only ensures justice for the victims of piracy but also sends a clear message that unlawful acts at sea will not be tolerated.

The transfer of the pirates to the Mumbai Police for further legal action highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing maritime challenges. By working together, nations can effectively counter piracy and uphold the principles of freedom of navigation and safe passage in the Indian Ocean Region.
