Washington: Renowned Indian-American physician, Dr. Mihir Meghani, has committed $4 million to advocate for Hindu causes in the United States. Dr. Meghani, who founded the Hindu America Foundation two decades ago, made the announcement at the annual Silicon Valley gala of the organization. He pledged to donate an additional $1.5 million over the next eight years, bringing his total contributions to $4 million, possibly making him the largest Indian-American donor for Hindu causes in the United States.
Dr. Meghani emphasized that his contributions are driven by a sense of duty and dharma, despite not having significant personal wealth. He and his wife, Tanvi, have already contributed $1.5 million to the Hindu American Foundation and an additional million dollars to various Hindu and Indian organizations over the past 15 years. The new pledge of $1.5 million is directed towards pro-India and Hindu organizations.
In an interview, Dr. Meghani explained that Hinduism is not easily understood by many Americans due to the predominance of Christianity. He stressed that Hinduism is not just a religion but a way of life and thinking. Dr. Meghani highlighted the importance of Hindus embracing both their Indian and Hindu identities, asserting that openness about Hindu identity will lead to better understanding among coworkers, friends, and neighbors.
The Hindu American Foundation, co-founded by Dr. Meghani and his friends, has achieved significant milestones, including the recognition of Diwali in the United States. Over the years, the organization has grown, and its annual budget is now $2.5 million. The goal is to increase the budget to $5 million next year and $20 million by the end of the decade, supported by a dedicated team of full-time staff members.
