New Delhi: In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant boost for the medical education sector, revealing plans to create 75,000 new medical seats within the next five years. This initiative is part of the government's effort to make healthcare more accessible and reduce the number of students seeking medical education abroad.

Modi reflected on the progress made over the past decade, noting that his government had increased the total number of medical seats to nearly 1 lakh in the last 10 years. He expressed his surprise at learning that approximately 25,000 Indian students travel abroad annually to study medicine. In response to this concern, the government has committed to expanding opportunities at home by adding 75,000 new medical seats.

The Prime Minister emphasized that a "Developed India" must also be a "Healthy India," underlining the importance of nutrition and healthcare as pillars of national growth. According to government data, the number of medical colleges in the country has seen an impressive rise, with an 82% increase from 387 colleges before 2014 to 704 in 2023. This expansion has led to a 110% increase in the number of MBBS seats, which have grown from 51,348 to 1,07,948 during the same period.

Modi reiterated that his government's commitment to healthcare education aims to ensure that fewer Indian students have to seek medical training abroad. The addition of new medical seats will help the country nurture its own medical talent and support the broader goal of building a healthier, stronger India.
