Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez inaugurated the Tata Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Monday, marking a significant step in India's defense manufacturing. This facility is set to produce India's first privately built C-295 aircraft, the country’s first private-sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for military aircraft.

In 2021, India’s Ministry of Defence signed a substantial ₹21,935-crore agreement with Airbus Defence and Space SA, Spain, for 56 C-295 transport aircraft to replace the aging Avro-748 planes in the Indian Air Force. Under this deal, 16 planes will be delivered fully assembled from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be assembled locally in Vadodara. Officials confirmed that the first locally produced aircraft is expected to be completed by September 2026, with all 40 units scheduled for delivery by August 2031.

"This factory will strengthen India-Spain relations as well as our 'Make in India, Make for the World' mission," PM Modi said, emphasizing the facility's significance. He also honored the late Ratan Tata, noting that Tata would have celebrated this achievement. "This C-295 aircraft factory reflects the new work culture of New India... I am confident that in the future, the aircraft made in this factory will also be exported to other countries," PM Modi added.

Key Features of the C-295 Aircraft
The C-295 aircraft stands out for its efficiency, high availability rates, and versatility. Designed by Airbus, it is lightweight and boasts lower maintenance and operational costs.

As a multi-role tactical airlifter, the C-295 is equipped to handle various missions, including logistics, rescue, and support. Its name reflects its design and performance: "C" stands for CASA, the original manufacturer; "2" indicates its two engines; and "95" signifies its 9.5-tonne payload capacity.

The aircraft features a powerful Pratt and Whitney Canada PW100 engine, providing 2,645 hp, and a redesigned wing that enhances its overall performance. It has proven its capabilities in demanding environments, including Chad, Iraq, and Afghanistan, flying up to 100 hours per month during missions.

The reliability of the C-295 was highlighted during an EUFOR mission in Chad, where two Spanish Air Force aircraft logged approximately 160 flight hours per month over 11 months, achieving an impressive availability rate of over 95%.

Moreover, the C-295 can refuel other aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing planes, with a capacity to offload up to 6 tonnes of fuel. Equipped with a fuel probe, it can extend its operational range and function as a tanker for other C-295s or helicopters.
