Indu Malhotra takes oath  as 25th Supreme Court judge

 The 61-year-old Indu Malhotra was sworn in as 25th Supreme Court judge today. She was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra. Now Indu Malhotra has become the 1st woman lawyer who has elevated directly and took oath as Supreme Court judge.

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Indu Malhotra as a judge of the Supreme Court.

In 2007, Indu Malhotra was only the second woman to be appointed a senior advocate by the top court, three decades after Leila Seth first made history.

 Worth mentioning here Indu Malhotra is a well-known arbitration expert who took oath as Supreme Court judge today.

Indu Malhotra's name was recommended by the Supreme Court's Collegium in January which was approved by the Centre, on April 25.

Apart from Malhotra, Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph was also recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court. However, the Centre asked the collegium to think again the same, making the experts and opposition parties question the government's choice.

Now Indu Malhotra joined SC women judges club in which Fathima Beevi, Sujata Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Mishra, Ranjana Desai and sitting Judge, Justice R Banumathi are included.
