Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's Chief Minister, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court until June 1st, 2024, in the ongoing investigation related to the Delhi Excise Policy case. Kejriwal, who is currently in Tihar jail following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), received this interim relief from the highest court on Friday.
The Supreme Court's decision came amidst arguments from the ED opposing Kejriwal's bail plea. The ED contended that granting him bail would set a precedent that goes against the principles of equality and the rule of law. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21st in connection with the excise policy case.
The court clarified that a detailed order on the matter would be issued soon. The ED had argued that the right to campaign for an election is not an inherent right, constitutional, or even a legal one. They emphasized that no political leader, regardless of whether they are a contesting candidate or not, has been granted interim bail for campaigning.
In response to the ED's stance, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), through a press release, expressed strong objection to the affidavit filed by the Enforcement Directorate. They highlighted the efforts of Kejriwal's legal team in contesting the opposition to his interim bail plea before the Supreme Court.
