International Translation Day is observed on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible Translator who is known as the patron saint for the translators. The purpose of an approved recognized International Translation Day was launched by FIT in the year 1991 to show solidarity of the translation community worldwide. The International Federation of Translators (FIT) was established in 1953. In the year 1991, FIT started the idea of celebrating International Translation Day for the identification of the translation community in the whole world.

On 24th May 2017, the United Nations General Assembly approved a decision declaring 30th of September as International Translation Day. The signatory countries of the Draft Resolution A/71/L.68 were Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Paraguay, Qatar, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Vietnam along with many organizations. The importance of International Translation Day is to the role of professional translation in nations connecting to each other. The day is dedicated to displaying the solidarity of the translation community worldwide. This is an attempt to support the profession of translation in several countries and not necessarily in Christian countries only. The translation is a profession that is becoming an essential need of the moment in the progressive globalization era.

Despite the Covid-19 crisis, FIT is focussed to highlight the significance of translators, interpreters and terminologists in managing the situations on an International scale, National scale as well as on a local scale. Translation professionals are most important to make certain the flow of information between different language groups and this is the reason the theme of the 2020 edition of International Translation Day is, “Finding the words for a world in crisis”.
