NEW DELHI: A proposal to establish the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana was presented in the Lok Sabha. The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was introduced on the inaugural day of the Winter Session of Parliament.

Earlier in October, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned the Bill's introduction in Parliament. This amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009, aims to pave the way for the establishment of the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana's Mulugu district, as outlined in the Thirteenth Schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, 2014.

An allocation of Rs 889.07 crore has been proposed for this purpose, according to a statement released by the Tribal Affairs ministry in October. The ministry highlighted that the creation of this new university is intended not only to expand access and enhance the quality of higher education in the state but also to promote opportunities for higher education. The university will facilitate research and teaching in tribal art, culture, and traditional knowledge systems, benefiting the tribal population in the state.

Additionally, it is expected that the new university will address regional disparities and create additional educational opportunities.

Furthermore, the central government has included 21 Bills on its agenda for the winter session, including proposed replacements for the IPC, the Indian Evidence Act, and the CrPC.
