The 2024 edition of the world's most expensive cricket tournament concluded on Sunday with Kolkata Knight Riders clinching the title against Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Pat Cummins, in Chennai. Mitchell Starc bowled a magical delivery, justifying his high auction price, as Kolkata Knight Riders delivered a comprehensive bowling performance to dismiss Sunrisers Hyderabad for just 113 runs. This marked the lowest total by a team batting first in an IPL final, with SRH getting bowled out in 18.3 overs.
While RCB caused disappointment for its fans by not progressing beyond the playoffs, there was reason for joy on the final night. Star Indian batter Virat Kohli finished the IPL 2024 season with the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs, becoming the only Indian to win this honor twice. King Kohli scored 741 runs in 15 matches at an average of 61.75, including one century and five fifties.
In other awards, Punjab Kings' Harshal Patel won the Purple Cap, finishing the tournament with 24 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 9.73 and an average of 19.87. Kolkata Knight Riders' mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy had a chance to surpass Patel in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk. However, he ended up with a solitary wicket of Shahbaz Ahmed as the Riders marched on to lift their third IPL title.
