CHENNAI: Mumbai Indians In the IPL 2023 Eliminator, Akash Madhwal broke a record long held by the legendary Anil Kumble by destroying Lucknow Super Giants with a scorching 5-wicket haul for only 5 runs.

Prerak Mankad, Ayush Badoni, Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mohsin Khan were all bowled by Madhwal to end the LSG chase and give the Mumbai Indians an 81-run victory.

Kumble lauded and commended the 29-year-old fast bowler for showing up in a game under extreme circumstances in a tweet. The former India captain and coach wrote, "Welcome to the 5/5 club." Kumble accomplished the feat during the 2009 IPL season, which was contested in South Africa, against the Rajasthan Royals.

His efforts were aided by the LSG hitters' sloppy runs between the wickets. During their pursuit, Krunal Pandya's team were stopped three times outside the crease.

Suryakumar Yadav was injured, therefore Madhwal was brought in to fill in for him at MI during the IPL 2022 season. Madhwal plays for Uttarakhand on the domestic circuit. At his starting salary of Rs. 20 lakh, he was kept on by the franchise for this edition.

Madhwal was first spotted by Ex-India opener Wasim Jaffer, when the jafer coached the Uttarakhand team in 2019. He was then signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)  in 2021, but only served as a net bowler and was unable to break into the team.
