CHENNAI: The Chennai Police detained 24 people for reselling tickets outside the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai's Chepauk as part of a crackdown on the sale of Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets on the black market.

From the suspects, the police seized 62 tickets and Rs. 65,700 in cash. The arrests were made on April 12 during the game between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), and the case has been filed in accordance with the necessary statutes.

The arrest of five people for printing and selling fake IPL tickets at the Delhi Capitals (DC) vs. Mumbai Indians (MI) game at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium led to this event. Following a tip regarding the fake tickets, the officers from the police department in plain clothes were able to arrest the suspect.

On the illicit market, 750 rupee tickets for CSK games at the Chepauk were exchanged for Rs. 5,000. 17 people were detained by Triplicane Police for selling tickets on the black market during the CSK vs. RR game. Special teams were sent out to stop the selling of tickets on the black market, and 11 cases were reported.

The police disclosed that the accused groups had bought numerous tickets and resold them for astronomical sums. The City Police Act's booking guidelines were used to lodge the accused.

IPL ticket sales on the black market are nothing new. When the IPL was played in the United Arab Emirates in 2014, tickets costing Dh80 (or Rs. 1,308 at the time) were sold online for as much as Dh1,500 (or Rs. 24,527 at the time).
To stop the selling of IPL tickets on the illicit market, the police have increased their patrols. However, the problem still exists, and strict measures must be put in place to solve it.
