TEHRAN: The anti-Iran sanctions re-imposed by the previous US administration, according to Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), should be withdrawn in order to establish a "positive agreement" in the ongoing Vienna nuclear talks.

"The Iranian negotiators' agenda for continuing the eighth round of talks has been carefully specified," Shamkhani tweeted on Monday, adding that "an agreement that does not lift the 'maximum pressure' sanctions will have an impact on the country's (Iran) economy, and cannot be the basis of a good agreement." According to media reports, the eighth round of Vienna talks, which had been postponed for a few days, was due to resume on Tuesday in the Austrian city of Vienna.

In exchange for the relaxation of US and Western sanctions, Iran agreed to some constraints on the expansion of its nuclear programme under the nuclear agreement concluded in June 2015. Former US President Donald Trump, however, unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, reimposing sanctions on Iran, prompting Iran to abandon some of its nuclear pledges, according to the article.
