According to the World Health Organization, there have been 82 deaths between June 1 and August 15. The WHO recommends vector control and prevention of bites from sand flies, mosquitoes, and ticks to prevent the spread of Chandipura virus. The health ministry reported 245 cases of AES (acute encephalitis syndrome), including 82 deaths, and a case fatality rate of 33 percent.
Chandipura virus affected states
Chandipura virus (CHPV) is active in western, central and southern parts of India, especially during the monsoon season. According to WHO, the current outbreak is the largest in the last 20 years. CHPV cases increase every four to five years in Gujarat. The virus is spread by vectors such as sandflies, mosquitoes and ticks. The mortality rate from CHPV infection is 56-75 per cent and there is no specific treatment or vaccine available.
WHO alert
WHO has issued an alert that the Chandipura virus is already decreasing, but after the rains the risk of spreading the disease increases due to mosquitoes and flies. Samples of the infected are taken, and timely identification of the disease can reduce the number of deaths.
symptoms
The virus mostly affects children under the age of 15. Symptoms can include fever with convulsions, coma, and in some cases, death. Mortality can be very high in children, with AES occurring within 48 to 72 hours of symptom onset.
