IS Triple Talaq Bill tabled in winter parliament session today?

New Delhi [India], Dec 28 (NT): The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which tries to find to criminalize the practice of triple talaq, is likely to be tabled in the winter Parliament session by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday.

The draft of Triple Talaq bill asserts, "Any pronouncement of talaq by a person upon his wife, by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever, shall be void and illegal".

There is also a provision of sentence for a term, which possibly can be extended to three years with a fine for violators. The draft bill also envisions giving the right to divorcee Muslim women for maintenance.

Apart from that It also has a provision for the divorcee Muslim women to claim the custody of their minor children. As per the draft the offences under the purview of this bill will be cognizable and non-bailable.

This Bill shall extend to the entire of India excluding Jammu and Kashmir.

In the row of disapproval, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which is in opposition to the tabling of the Bill, demanded the Central Government to take out and withhold the triple talaq bill.

The AIMPLB representative further alleged the Centre of not following the laid course of action in drafting the bill.

AIMPLB even claimed that the Bill was in opposition to women and children, and if put into practice, it would tear down many families (NT)
