Is Your Child Suffering From Diarrhea???
Share:

Toddler’s diarrhea is also known as chronic nonspecific diarrhea of childhood, and it affects children from 6 months to 5 years of age. Children with toddler’s diarrhea will have 3-10 loose stools per day

Causes of diarrhea

Diarrhea is usually caused by a viral infection of the lining of the intestines (gastroenteritis). Sometimes it is caused by bacteria or parasites. Occasionally a food allergy or drinking too much fruit juice may cause diarrhea. If your child has just one or two loose stools, the cause is probably something unusual your child ate. A diet of nothing but clear fluids for more than 2 days may cause green, watery stools.

Diarrheal infections can be spread through:

  • Dirty hands
  • Contaminated food or water
  • Some pets
  • Direct contact with fecal matter (i.e., from dirty diapers or the toilet)

Symptoms of diarrhea

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Dehydration

Treating diarrhea

  • Eat more foods containing starch. Starchy foods are easily digested during diarrhea.
  • Drink extra water. Avoid all fruit juices and carbonated drinks.
  • Milk and milk products are fine.
  • Avoid beans or any other foods that cause loose stools.

When should I call the doctor?

Call the doctor if your toddler has diarrhea and doesn't seem to be improving after 24 hours. Also call if your child has diarrhea and any of the following:

  • Vomiting multiple times
  • Signs of dehydration such as dry mouth and infrequent urination.
  • A high fever — 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) or higher
