Overnight, powerful explosions shook the southern suburbs of Beirut, causing the ground to tremble and sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

Local residents reported that the bombardment was so severe that car alarms blared and buildings swayed as Israeli fighter jets targeted the densely populated areas, including the vicinity of the international airport.

A source linked to Lebanon's Hezbollah group informed the news agency that Israel carried out 11 consecutive airstrikes, marking what has been described as the most aggressive assault on Beirut to date.

While the Israeli military has not released an official statement regarding the strikes, Hezbollah has remained silent on the matter.

Israeli media outlets indicated that the airstrikes were aimed at Hashem Safieddine, a potential successor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was reportedly killed in an Israeli attack last week.

Israel's military announced on Friday that its fighter jets launched airstrikes on Hezbollah positions near the Lebanon-Syria border overnight. The strikes targeted infrastructure close to the Masnaa border crossing, as part of Israel's ongoing efforts to disrupt the flow of weapons into Lebanon from Syria.

According to the military, the air raids aimed to prevent arms transfers to Hezbollah, including the destruction of an underground tunnel used for smuggling weapons. The 3.5-kilometer (approximately two-mile) tunnel reportedly enabled the storage and transportation of large quantities of arms between Syria and Lebanon.

The military said the tunnel’s operations were overseen by Hezbollah's 4400 Unit, responsible for the transportation of weapons from Iran and its allies to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

These airstrikes come amid a heightened conflict in the region. Recently, over 300,000 people, primarily Syrian refugees, fled from Lebanon into Syria to escape the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israel's focus has shifted to strengthening its border with Lebanon, almost a year after the Palestinian militant group Hamas carried out its deadliest attack on Israel in October of the previous year. Hezbollah, in support of Hamas, began launching small-scale strikes on Israel shortly after, prompting the displacement of around 60,000 Israelis from the northern region.
