Google has announced plans to continue expanding the capacity of its two existing data centre zones in Mumbai and Delhi, supporting the growing demand for its cloud services in India. This move follows the company’s introduction of the Gemini 1.5 Flash artificial intelligence (AI) model, which can now be operated locally within India.

Bikram Singh Bedi, vice-president and managing director of Google Cloud India, highlighted that the region is one of the fastest-growing for Google Cloud globally. "Adoption is significantly accelerating. Capacity continues to grow, and we are committed to investing further," Bedi said.

At the recent Google for India event, the tech giant shared that Indian organisations across various sectors, including public sector enterprises, can now store their data and perform machine learning with the Gemini 1.5 Flash model within India. This new capability ensures greater control and security for companies leveraging Google’s advanced AI models.

Additionally, Google Cloud is collaborating with the EkStep Foundation to develop a "DPI-in-a-box" model, aimed at helping other nations build digital public infrastructure similar to India’s. Bedi noted that there is strong interest in the DPI model, especially from countries in the Caribbean, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Bedi explained that Google’s decisions to expand its technology infrastructure are driven by customer demand. Google is the only cloud provider offering public cloud, edge, and air-gap model variants. "As we continue our global expansion, we are bringing generative AI technologies closer to our customers in India," he added.

Several companies across India, including HDFC Ergo, Federal Bank, Mahindra Group, Apollo Hospitals, Aditya Birla’s TMRW, and IndiGo, have already adopted Google's AI technology. Bedi emphasized the importance of offering diverse AI solutions and Google’s approach to providing an open and integrated tech stack.
