JERUSALEM: An Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that Israel's aerial defence system intercepted a rocket launched from Gaza on Monday, amid simmering tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.

"One rocket was fired into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, and it was intercepted by the Iron Dome Air Defense System," a military spokesperson stated. In Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip, the rocket triggered alarms. According to reports, it was the first time a rocket was fired from Gaza in seven months.

The rocket launch came during a recent surge of unrest that saw Israeli police attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month. During Israeli raids, at least 200 Palestinians were injured.

Meanwhile, over ten Israelis have been killed in recent weeks in a series of shooting, stabbing, and car-ramming assaults, some of which were carried out by Arab Israeli residents.

There were no initial reports of casualties, and no faction in the 2.3 million-strong enclave claimed responsibility for the attack. Israel deems Hamas responsible for all missile fire from the country, and normally responds with airstrikes.
