Israeli forces conducted a raid in Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank, on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of seven Palestinians, including a doctor, and leaving nine others injured, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The operation, which the Israeli army described as targeting militants, saw several Palestinian gunmen shot. No Israeli casualties were reported from the incident.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA cited the health ministry's account of the casualties.
The head of Jenin Governmental Hospital confirmed that one of those killed was a surgical doctor. He was fatally injured near the hospital premises, the director said.
The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, is a focal point in the Palestinians' aspirations for an independent state. U.S.-mediated negotiations aimed at achieving a two-state solution to the long-standing conflict broke down in 2014.
The raid in Jenin underscores the ongoing tensions and violence in the West Bank. The territory remains a contentious issue between Israel and Palestinians, with the latter seeking it as the core of their future state. The Israeli military frequently conducts operations in the area, citing security concerns and the presence of militant groups.
The international community, including the United Nations, has repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, urging both sides to return to negotiations and to refrain from actions that escalate tensions and lead to further loss of life.
